ELECTION NEWS: Doonesbury takes final look at Donald Trump's cowardly decision to dodge the Vietnam War draft, then proclaim in 2016 how much he 'loves' veterans...
Readers who appreciate this recent Doonesbury should purchase a copy of "Yuge!"One of the two books I have been recommending to people who wanted more information about the Donald Trump campaign has been Doonesbury's "Yuge!", which we purchased and shared here at home. The other book was David Cay Johnston's "The Making of Donald Trump." Both books compiled decades of reporting on Trump's activities, lies, and hypocrisies, and both deserved to be purchased in their book form (as we did) and not just enjoyed on line.
Now, at the last minute before those who didn't early vote prepared to vote in the campaign of 2016, Doonesbury has released one of the best summaries of Trump ever -- a look at how the Donald Trump of 2016 -- who claims to "love" veterans so much -- has to be contrasted with the selfish rich kid of 1968, who dodged the Vietnam draft while so many were sent to Vietnam, nearly 60,000 Americans to die in combat there. (Disclosure: I was the first Conscientious Objector -- I-O -- in the Elizabeth New Jersey draft board and spent most of the Vietnam War years providing legal services and organizing help for soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen who were organizing against the Vietnam War, and more generally against U.S. imperialism. Two films that can help people in 2016 understand those challenges are "Hearts and Minds and Sir No Sir!" The best book about the "GI Movement" that ended America's invasion of Vietnam is still "Soldiers in Revolt" by David Cortright).
Like most bullies, Trump is a coward. While we will never have the pleasure of seeing him "behind the barn" (or the gym) against Joe Biden, his war record is clear.
