Forrest Claypool (left) and Rahm Emanuel (right).The City of Chicago is being asked to raise property taxes by between $500 and $600 million, as the headlines have reminded everyone. And there are splits in the Chicago City Council over whether to approve the deal. Aldermen representing the wards that have a large number of lucrative commercial properties are hearing from the majority of their constituents that the tax increase will be another one of those "job killers." But the majority of Chicago wards include people whose property taxes are paid on their own homes (although the number of those have been reduced since the scandalous banker catastrophe that followed the "real estate bubble").
But how many of those new dollars in taxes will go to Chicago Public Schools?
Zero.
