OPT OUT NEWS. Drummond parents en masse opting out... ''We would rather have our kids engaged in Montessori schoolwork, artwork, independent projects or quiet reading, instead of ‘bubbling’ on a test that that doesn’t count for anything.'...
According to a February 20, 2014 announcement from More than a Score Chicago, "Thirty-four parents of students at Drummond Elementary have written a public letter to their fellow parents stating that they will be opting their children out of the upcoming ISAT and encouraging other parents to consider opting out their own children."
Twenty families told their fellow parents at Drummond Elementary School in Chicago that they are opting out their children from the ISAT testing program that begins March 2, 2014. Above, the letter they have made public. The ISAT, which Substance is now referring to as the "Zombie Test" because it is dead but still walking around, is scheduled to begin on March 2 in all elementary schools, and many teachers have been using obsolete "ISAT Prep" materials with children as young as seven and eight for weeks instead of real instruction.
The Drummond decision came after weeks of discussion, and is part of the boycott of the ISAT that has been growing across Chicago.
The More Than A Score report continues: "The parents emailed the letter to the listservs of all the classrooms in the school on Wednesday, February 19th, saying, 'We would rather have our kids engaged in Montessori schoolwork, artwork, independent projects or quiet reading, instead of ‘bubbling’ on a test that that doesn’t count for anything.'”
Drummond’s opt out movement is growing by the minute. On February 20th, CTU organizer Matt Luskin will speak to teachers about the ISAT and the organizing efforts around the city. Parents will also be passing out flyers and opt out forms over the next week. Drummond is a public Montessori school with 347 preschool through 8th grade students.
Teachers and parents across Chicago have been sharing Opt Out information. CORE (the Caucus of Rank and File Educators that leads the Chicago Teachers Union) has distributed more than 5,000 leaflets explaining Opt Out, and the number is growing across the city.
By the last week of February 2014, dozens of meetings were being held across Chicago to organize the Opt Out from the tyranny of so-called "standardized" tests. One major meeting will be held on Saturday morning February 22 at the South Shore library 2505 E. 73rd St.. Substance will report more Opt Out News as the March 2 date approaches.
