Longtime Community Organizer Jay Travis Challenges Machine Incumbent in Democratic Primary for Illinois 26th District

Travis will release policy platform and announce early endorsements on Tuesday, February 4

WHO: Jay Travis, 40-year-old South Side native and award-winning former Executive Director of Kenwood Oakland Community Organization (KOCO), is running a grassroots campaign to become State Representative for Illinois 26th District.

Jay will be joined by her early endorsers at the Chicago Teachers Union, Citizen Action Illinois, and youth and community supporters who have directly benefited from the reforms she has championed throughout her years of tireless activism in the 26th District, including securing over $14 million in state funds to create youth summer jobs and prevent violence

Jay Travis is a dedicated community leader with a 20-year-history of working for democracy, equality and social justice in Chicago. A South Side native, she has worked to improve our schools and stop school closings, develop affordable housing, protect our seniors, and create jobs and economic opportunity for those in the margins. She is a graduate of Mann Elementary, Kenwood Academy, Columbia College, and the University of Chicago.

WHAT: Press Conference at Campaign Headquarters (4532 S. Cottage Grove). Jay will release her platform for how she will work in Springfield to stimulate our economy, fight for workers, and strengthen public schools.

WHY: Ive been organizing communities for a very long time and have been pleased to see incremental changes, Jay said. But, when you have a politician like Christian Mitchell working against the interests of working families its hard to sustain that change. We shouldn't accept this sort of leadership. With their vote, our elected officials can say no to school closings, no to the stealing of their retirement benefits, and no to a lack of job creation. Christian has failed to stand up for children, seniors, and the unemployed. We deserve better.
