Chicago hearings on military recruitment policy in the schools will be held December 10, 2007
Less than three weeks after an unusual meeting of the Chicago Board of Education [see Page One story in this Substance] attended by more than a dozen active duty military personnel and a Chicago alderman who support military recruiting in the city’s public schools, school board attorneys announced on December 4 that the Board will hold public hearings on the proposed Policy on Recruitment.
The hearing is scheduled to be held on Monday, December 10, 2007, from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the school system’s headquarters at 125 S. Clark St., Chicago.
Those who wish to sign up and testify in person at the hearings must sign up in the lobby at 125 S. Clark St. between 3:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. The Board will also take public comment by fax to the “CPS Policy Advisor” at 773-553-1501, according to the notice published by the Board’s Law Department.
The proposed rules are available on the Board’s website, at a lengthy URL (http://cps.k12.il.us/ AboutCPS/Board/Board_ Actions/FY07/11/07-PO1.pdf.
The proposed policy is the same one that was on the agenda for the November 14 Board of Education meeting. The Board has not explained why the proposed policy was deferred November 14.
Members of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and Iraq Veterans Against War (IVAW) have stated that they intend to testify at the December 10 hearings.
