Another music video from the Chicago Teachers Strike of 2012 features some of the creative signs
Another music video produced out of the Chicago Teachers Strike of 2012 includes an array of the signs teachers, children, and others carried during the pickets and rallies between September 10 and September 18, 2012, during the first CTU strike in a quarter century. The video's title is Chicago teachers and their funny signs.
Some of the signs carried by the 10,000 Chicago Teachers Union members and supporters down Chicago's Michigan Ave. on September 13, 2012. The marchers above are going to Grant Park from the Regency Hyatt Hotel where they protested special tax breaks given to the Hyatt corporation, which is owned mainly by the Pritzker family. Penny Pritzker, a Chicago billionaire, was appointed to the Chicago Board of Education by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in May 2011. She helped raise $3 million a few months earlier for "Stand for Children," which became the most lucrative of the Astroturf groups attacking Chicago's teachers and public schools. The signs, songs, and other cultural products of the strike will be the subject of compilation for a long time to come.
One of the major aspects of the strike that observers are compiling is that there were more CPS students on the picket lines with the striking teachers (many of whom were their parents) than there were inside the "Scab Centers" set up by Rahm's "Chief Executive Officer," Jean-Claude Brizard. At some of the Scab Centers, the adults (who were being paid full salary during the strike) outnumbered the children by a ratio or three- or four-to-one.
