Rahm Emanuel, Eli Broad featured at Los Angeles schools conference pushing corporate 'school reform'
On the same day the Chicago Board of Education held its monthly meeting, filled with proteges of the Broad Foundation holding executive seats, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Eli Broad and others in Los Angeles for what was billed as a "School Reform Summit." Emanuel's participation in the event was to appear on a panel discussion with the other featured "education mayors" -- Newark's Cory Booker and Los Angeles's Antonio Villaraigosa. On Wednesday, February 27, 2013 United Way of Greater Los Angeles will host a national discussion with key leaders on how we can strengthen low-performing schools through partnerships in our classrooms and communities.

Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark. As mayor of the largest city in the state of New Jersey, Cory A. Booker has spearheaded Newark’s mission of urban transformation by targeting its resources to increase security and economic abundance while fostering an environment that is both nurturing and empowering for local residents. Mayor Booker has also garnered widespread attention for his continuing efforts at educational reform which have significantly expanded high-quality public education options for families and led to the creation of valuable academic and career development opportunities for the city’s underprivileged youths. Last year, in recognition of his brilliant leadership, Booker was named one of “The 100 Most Influential People in the World” by TIME Magazine.
Rahm Emanuel, Mayor of Chicago Prior to taking office, Rahm Emanuel served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and worked as both a Senior Policy Advisor to President Clinton and White House Chief of Staff for President Obama. As Mayor of Chicago, Emanuel has enacted groundbreaking education reforms allowing elementary school students to gain an additional two weeks of instruction per year while launching a $7 billion plan to revitalize the city’s roads, rails and runways, creating thousands of new jobs for Chicagoans in the process.
Antonio Villaraigosa, Mayor of Los Angeles. Since being elected in 2005, Antonio R. Villaraigosa has advocated innovative approaches to creating jobs, improving public education and spurring economic development – making Los Angeles a national model of growth and sustainability. Under his leadership, the city implemented far-reaching educational reforms such as the passage of a $9.1 billion initiative to rebuild and modernize California schools and a doubling in the number of LAUSD campuses which meet the state’s academic performance goals. Villaraigosa is also founder of the Partnership for L.A. Schools – one of the country’s largest school turnaround organizations working to boost student achievement at low-performing campuses while piloting programs that can be replicated throughout the District.
