Huberman's First Amendment violation cost CPS $54,000 in attorney's fees and costs
The failed attempt by Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Rob Huberman to restrict teachers' rights under the First Amendment of the United States Constitution by banning political campaigning for union office in the city's public schools has cost the school system $54,070 — the cost of one newly hired teacher or more than one PSRP — as a result of the federal court activities that were held in March. On August 25, 2010, the Chicago Board of Education voted to approve Board Report 10-0825-AR2, which paid atorneys fees and costs in the case of Deborah Lynch v. Board of Education of the City of Chicago. The Board Report was announced following the executive session of the Board's August 25 meeting, but the Agenda of Action of the meeting was not made public until late on September 3.
The case was covered extensively at www.substancenews.net and in the pages of the print edition of Substance. The report of the victory in the case (March 26, 2010) can be found on line at
